7/2/10 Highrise fire 1027 Cathedral St.
At approximately 0600hrs the working fire assignment was requested to respond for a fire on the second floor of a multistory highrise. Upon arrival units where asked to walk up to and check stairwells and passageways of all floors, E31 checked 14-17 and found no smoke or persons in distress. The fire was quickly extinguished and units released without incident.![]()

6/19/10 C shift and D shift switch Lieutenant's due to new nepotism policy in the city fire department. Lieutenant Kohlhepp will now be on D shift and Lieutenant Kemp will be responding with C shift.![]()
6/8/10 Dwelling fire 4409 Old York Rd
At 2122 hrs E31 was dispatched second on a E4 box for a report of a dwelling fire. T29 went on scene with fire showing from the second floor. 31 took a line and advanced it to the second floor to find high heat and heavy fire in the front of the building. The fire was quickly extinguished without incident and units cleared after an hour and a half.![]()

As of 5/29/10 the station of engine 31 is back in sevice! We would like to thank everyone that aided in the rehabilitation of the firehouse. Medic 3 will also be returning to waverly when we are able to finish putting everything back together and getting everything set up for the unit and it's supplies.![]()
2/2/10 Vehicle Fire Rose St/Sinclair Lane
At approximately 1130 hrs E31 was dispatched to the above location for a report of a possible vehicle fire. 31 arrived on location to find a vehicle fully evolved and quickly began extinguishment operations. Unit cleared a short time later without incident.![]()
2/1/10 Box 6-30 413 E. Biddle St.
At 0130 hrs units were dispatched for report of a dwelling fire. First arriving units found a 3 story brick dwelling with fire throughout the third floor. Due to the amount of fire and the fire load a second alarm was requested. Units cleared without incident after about 3 hours.![]()
1/31/10 Box Alarm 4-23 4313 Old York Rd
At approximately 0400hrs E4 was dispatched on a silent for report or sparks from electric box. Upon arrival they found the panel on fire and the fire already into the walls and rapidly spreading. E4 requested the rest of the box and while reroute the fire spread through the walls and up into the attic. Due to the difficulty and lack of access the fire was able to spread throughout the entire attic and into the ceiling. Several minutes later the interior conditions diminished to the point that all units needed to be pulled out and exterior operations were commenced. At that point BC4 requested a second alarm. The fire was placed under control around 0630hrs and all units were relieved on the fire ground. After several hours of overhaul, units cleared without incident.![]()
1/30/10 Box Alarm 51-19 637 N. Belnord Ave
At 2235 hrs units were dispatched to above address for a report of a dwelling fire with person possibly trapped. While reroute FCB notified companies that a person had jumped from a second story window, with another possibly still trapped. Engine 51 went on scene with a 2 story e.o.g. row with heavy fire showing throughout the first and second floors. BC1 arrived asking for a working fire assignment. Truck 15 arrived along with Truck 3 and immediately began searches, as Engine 51 and 5 worked to knock down fire conditions. E31 assisted with extinguishment operations and overhaul once they arrived. One civilian was transported to the hospital with minor injuries and units cleared in about 3 hours.![]()
1/30/10 vehicle fire 1700 blk Abbotston St 33 closed
At 1811hrs E31 was dispatched for a report of a vehicle fire. E33's first due but they were closed. 31 arrived on scene to find a van parked in the intersection fully involved. Members of the unit had to use foam to extinguish the vehicle due to the recently filled fuel tank rupturing. After cleanup, the unit cleared in approximately 1 hour.

1/23/10 Box Alarm 33-17 446 E. 28th St
A call was received at 1856 for a report of a dwelling fire. Units went on scene with 2 story middle of the group heavy smoke showing. Seconds after arrival fire began to show second floor side alpha. E31 and E33 began advancing hose lines and had the fire under control within a few minutes.![]()
1/15/10 Box Alarm 6-20 1715 N. Caroline St
At 2003hrs units were dispatched for a report of a dwelling fire. Units arrived on scene to find 3 story middle of the group with heavy fire showing from the 3rd floor. 33 began advancing a line a line to the third floor while 31 took the second line and extinguished 3 separate fires found in other locations in the dwelling. units cleared in about 2 hours.![]()

Around 0525hrs E31 was dispatched along with E33 and T5 to the above location on the second alarm.![]()

11/17/09 FPR Cashin is making good progress towards his recovery and we hope he is able to come back to work soon! We are also still working as hard as we can to get back into our firehouse on Greenmount Ave. We have progressed to the next stage and the new projected return date will be some time in Feburary or March.![]()
11/8/09 D shift takes T15 box with report of persons trapped
At 0037 hrs units were dispatched to Box Alarm T15-9 1617 N. Gay St with multiple reports of a dwelling fire with a person hanging from a second floor window. Truck 15 arrived with a 2 story middle of the group vacant dwelling with smoke showing, and a person hanging in the 2nd fl window. Truck 15 began throwing ladders and rescued the person while E33 grabbed a hydrant, E31 covered their plug and both units began advancing hoselines. Truck 5 took the rear and reported fire showing from the 2nd floor. Units had fire in two rear rooms with some extension into the roof area. The victim was transported to local hospital by M16, After investigation units cleared in 2 1/2 hrs.

10/31/09 A shift catches box 33-16
At 0735 a call was recieved reporting a building fire at 2501 N. Charles St. Units went on scene with heavy smoke showing from a 3 story building that was a restaurant on the first floor, and apartments on the 2nd and 3rd floors. Units reported heavy fire conditions, BC2 requested a 2nd alarm to the fireground. Most of the fire was found on the 3rd floor middle and rear apartments that spread into the roof area. FPR Cashin recieved burns to his foot and lower leg while performing interior fire opperations. We wish him a speedy and full recovery!

10/20/09 C shift 2nd in on 21 box
At 0302 units were dispatched to 1108 Weldan Ave for a report of smoke in a building. Engine 13 took a plug and called on scene with a 2 story dwelling heavy smoke showing. Engine 31 arrived second, grabbed another hydrant and imediately began advancing a hoseline in to the house through the basement. The fire was placed under control after approximately 20 minutes and all units returned into service without incident in 95 minutes.

10/19/09 C shift takes 33-20 box
At 1638 the box tones alerted for the report of a dwelling fire at 1805 N Calvert St. Units arrived to find a 2 story middle of the group with heavy smoke showing from the front and fire showing in the rear. Engine 31 took a plug and immediately began advancing hoselines along with Engine 33. Heavy fire conditions and intense heat were found on all floors once inside the building. 31 began opperations on first floor while 6 took the basement and 33 made their way up to the second floor. After approximately 40 minutes the fire was completely extinguished. All units returned into service after overhaul without injury or incident with a total onscene time of about 2 hours.

10/17/09 A shift gets 33 box
At 1746 just as Engine 31 was clearing a medic run at St. Paul and 32nd St. Units were alerted for a report of a fire in a vacant dwelling in the 2000 block of Barclay St. Engine 6 was also on the street when the call was put out and took the front with smoke showing. 31 took the rear and advanced a hose line down an alley way and over several fences and made entry into the rear of the structure with help from truck 5. Engine 33 was not on the box because they were closed for the night because of the rotating closures. 31 and 6 both worked very aggressively to extinguish the fre that was found in the rear of the second floor and cleared in about 45 minutes.

9/4/09 A shift gets 33 box
At 1037 hrs a call was recieved reporting a dwelling fire at 1610 E 29th st. E 31 went on scene with a two story middle of the group heavy fire showing first floor and extending into the second. 31 stretched lines and began attacking the fire with no other engines or a truck to ventilate. E 33 was tranfered to E52 to cover for the rotating closures and 5 truck was on a medic assist run. 5 truck was dispatched on the working fire after clearing the previous run and began assiting with the ventilation and overhaul. Units cleared after a little over 2 hours without incident or injury.

At 0726 units were dispatched for a report of a fire at 1624 Federal St. Upon arrival E 31 discovered a two story brick dwelling with a trash fire and partial burnout of a stairway. The fire was extinguished quickly without incident.

8/3/09 D shift gets 33 box
D shift responds to 2231 Barclay St for a report of a dwelling fire. Units arrived to find a three story middle of the group row home with smoke showing from the second floor. All units worked rapidly to perform a primary search and to get the fire knocked. All units cleared in approximately 2 hours.

8/1/09 C shift catches 6 box
At 0415 hrs a call was recieved for a dwelling fire at 1210 Ensor St. Units called onscene with a 2 story middle of the group with fire showing first floor. After extinguishment and overhaul, units were cleared without incident.

7/26/09 A shift gets a 4 box
At 0631 hrs units were alerted for a possible building fire. Upon arrival of units a two story wood frame was found with smoke showing. A fire was discovered in the basement and quickly extinguished without incident.

7/25/09 B shift Box Alarm 54-6 5933 Belair Rd
At 1601 hrs box tones alerted companies for a report of a building fire at the above address. First arriving companies went onscene with heavy smoke showing from a large warehouse, extending into exposure buildings. 31 was dispatched on the second alarm and because of the difficulty in getting to the building a third alram was struck out in just a few minutes. When all was said and done it took units more than 6 hours to completely extinguish the fire and return back into service.

7/16/09 B shift Box Alarm T15-1 3234 Lyndale Ave
At 1835 hrs a call was recieved for a report of a fire. Truck 15 went onscene with a 2 story mog row with heavy smoke and fire showing from the 2nd floor front. Engine 33 grabbed a plug and advanced a line into the front. Engine 31 advanced a second line into the dwelling and assisted with the extinguishment of the fire. BC2 arrived on scene and asked for a working fire moments later. The fire was quickly knocked keeping the damage to a minimum.

7/7/09 C shift calls for a rescue box 33-22 23rd St and N. Charles St
At approximately 0212 hrs 31 Engine and Medic 16 were dispatched to the above location for a vehicle accident. 31 arrived on scene to find a full size van on its side with multiple people still inside and another vehicle resting against a building. 31 immediatly requested the rest of the rescue box and begain securing the vehicles and rendering patient care. One victim needed to be cut from the wreckage while the rest were just assisted.

7/7/2009 C shift gets 15 box
At 0354 hrs units were dispatched to Chase and McDonough for a report of a house on fire in the area. T15 went on scene with a 3 story mog vacant with smoke showing 2nd and 3rd floors. E6 and E51 advanced lines into the front of dwelling and began to knock down fire involving all 3 floors. E33 took the rear with E5 and T1, advising they had fire showing from 1st floor. E31 lead the innitial rit but was split up by BC2 to check both exposures for extention and to ventilate trapped smoke. The fire was extinguished after approximately 30 minutes and without incident.

6/28/2009 C shift gets 13 box
At 2206 hrs 31 engine was dispatched to 2101 Maryland Ave for a report of smoke in a building. 31 got a plug and took the front of the building and called in with smoke showing. 13 grabbed a plug and took the rear, both units began stretching lines into the building. The fire was found to be in the basement but while trying to extinguish the seat of the fire it climbed up the wall and engulfed the first floor bathroom. The fire was contained in one room in the basement and in the area of the first floor bathroom. The fire was extinguished with without incident.

6/24/2009 D shift gets fatal fire....HOMICIDE
At 1815 hrs 31 engine was dispatched on a silent for report of smoke in a dwelling. Upon arrival with heavy smoke found, the rest of the box was requested. Units worked to stretch lines and ventilate while still searching for the seat of the fire. The fire was found to be contianed mostly to the basement and after the fire was knocked a victim was located in a closet.

At 1053 hours units were dispatched for a report of smoke from a roof. BC2 arrived on scene at 1058 hours and
upgraded the scene to a working fire. Upon arrival 31 engine stretched a line and made entry through a second
story window on the charlie side of the fire building. The fire was placed under control in approximately 25
minutes and 31 engine was released after about 1 hour and 45 minutes.

B Shift gets late night fire
6/15/09 Box Alarm 33-22 2110 N Charles St
E31, E33, E13, E6, E21, E23, E8, T5, T16, M7, BC2, BC6 (W/F E52, T1)At 0252 hrs units were dispatched to a report of a basement fire in a dwelling. Engine 33 and Truck 5 went onscene with a 3 story mog with smoke showing. Engine 33 and Engine 31 advanced lines into the dwelling, finding heavy smoke on the first and second floors with no smoke or fire visible in the restaurant. While continuing to search for base of fire, Truck 5 along with Engine 13 found access to a seperate part of the basement where they encountered fire conditions. The fire was quickly extinquished and after investigation units returned to service in less than 2 hrs, while Engine 33 and Truck 5 remained onscene for investigation by FIB. Those units returned to service in 3 hrs.

6/12/09 The station of Engine 31 closed
Due to several health hazards the station of Engine 31 located at 3123 Greenmount Ave has been closed. We have been temporarily relocated to 25th and Kirk along with 33 Engine and 5 Truck but do continue to serve our district to the best of our ability.
6/4/2009, C Shift 3rd in on Box Alarm T15-14
At 1537 hrs a call was recieved reporting the vacant house down the street was on fire. The first arriving unit called in with heavy smoke showing from the front of the building. The fire was extinguished without incident and called under control at approximately 1605hrs.

0627 hours : E33, E31, E13, E6, E21, T5, T16, M16, BC2, BC6
Engine 33 called on scene with a 3 story end of the group, with heavy smoke showing from the third floor.
Engine 31 arrived seconds later pulling a second line off Engine 33 and assisting with the extinguishment
of the fire. The fire was found to be contained mostly to a studio style apartment and was extinguished
with out incident. Engine 31 cleared at approximately 0745 hours.

At 0945 hrs a report of a dwelling fire was reported, companies arrived and found basement fire in the rear.
After approximately 10 minutes the fire was reported under control. Companies remained on scene for 1 hour
and 15 minutes and cleared without incident.

Detroit LODD - Firefighter Killed In Vacant House Fire
A veteran Detroit firefighter died this morning (Nov 15th 2008) and four others were injured while battling a blaze at a vacant house on the city's east side. The fire started a little after 5 a.m. Walt Harris, 37, died after falling through the roof of the house at Sheridan and Kirby. He was caught under collapsing walls after the fire had been extinguished. One of the four injured has been released from the hospital. The other three are bring treated for their injuries, city fire officials said. Attempts to revive Harris at the scene and at a hospital were unsuccessful. Fire investigators are at the scene. Harris was a 19-year veteran of the department. He was assigned to Engine Co. #23 at E. Grand Boulevard and Moran on the city's east side. He joined in 1991. Harris is married and the father of six. His son, James Hill Harris, is also a firefighter for the city of Detroit.

1028 hrs box struck with report of persons trapped, companies arrived to find 1st and 2nd floors of a 2 story brick, middle of the group dwelling fully involved, BC2 struck out the 2nd alarm.
T15 arrived 1st followed by E33 who extinguished the main body of fire. Fire extended to Delta exposure, E31 advanced a line into Delta to extinguish fire in second floor rear.
Their were two civilian fire fatalities.

FDNY LODD - Firefighter Collapses During Training
A New York City firefighter that collapsed during a training exercise on Monday has died. Jamel M. Sears, 33, collapsed at the department's training academy during an evolution at 11:30 a.m., according to an FDNY statement. Firefighters on the scene attempted to revive Sears, and he was transported to the Mt. Sinai Medical Center, where he died Tuesday. The statement said Sears collapsed after "successfully completing an 18-minute training exercise where he donned full firefighting gear and performed a series of tasks and functional skills." Sears was appointed to the department on July 1 and was going through the 23-week probationary firefighter training program. A lifelong resident of The Bronx, he served with the U.S. Navy from 1995 through 1999 and he was assigned to the USS Alaska. Sears leaves behind a wife, who is a New York City police officer and two children, ages eight and 12.

C-Shift's Acting Man gets Promoted
The members of Engine 31 & Medic 3 would like to congratulate FF Nick Kohlhepp on his recent promotion to Lieutenant. Nick has been assigned to E31 on C-Shift for his 20+ years in the department. He will remain on C-Shift & be assigned to Engine Company 44 in Roland Park. We hope Nick gets his wish to return to E-31 but in the mean time we are all sure he will enjoy the many good nights of R&R.

C-Shift gets a early morning 27 Engine Box
July 20, 2008; At 0412 E27 & T26 were sent out on a silent. While enroute communications struck out the box for a report of fire @ Bel Air rd & Lake Ave. T26 arrived on scene with heavy smoke showing from the roof of a 2 story store front. Companies faced heavy smoke inside & made quick work of the fire. Crews were out for an extended period of time due to the amount of overhaul.

July 15, 2008; D-Shift companies were alerted for box 6-30 at 1618 Barclay St. Units arrived & found a kitchen fire. Companies made quick work of the fire & no injuries were reported. Crews were out for about an hour

July 13, 2008; Just after relieving D-Shift @ 1537 E31 along with other companies were alerted for Box Alarm 33-15 reporting a fire at 441 E 22nd St. Upon arrival companies recieved reports of people trapped. Units encounterd heavy smoke & fire conditions on the 2nd & 3rd floors & successfully evacuated 2 occupants from the dwelling.
